The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 12.20

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  Please make sure you continue to check out The Fashionable Times Blog where we will include all the important information you need as Fashion parents.  The website link is: http://hsfifashionabletimes.blogspot.com/

We have 3 full days of school this week until our Winter Break – every day of instruction is important so make sure students are making them count!  Once we get back from vacation, we will have 3 full weeks of school until the Fall term ends; teachers submit their final grades that colleges and universities will see; and January Regents will take place from  Tuesday, January 26 through Friday, January 29.

It was great to see so many parents at HSFI last week for our December Parents Association meeting; the Holiday Windows Unveiling Ceremony and our amazing Variety Show that showcased the performing talents and efforts of our HSFI students.  When we get back from vacation, we will begin our SING production in full force – we have over 300 students signed up and if your child is interested, have them sign up.

Thank you!

FASHIONABLE TIMES Principal's Message 12.6

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  Please make sure you continue to check out The Fashionable Times Blog where we will include all the important information you need as Fashion parents.  The website link is: http://hsfifashionabletimes.blogspot.com/

We are officially in the home stretch of the Fall term as we have entered the third marking period.  Colleges will see the grades that students receive at the end of this semester in January.  Students who need additional help in their classes can choose between the tutoring that is available from our teaching staff or from their classmates who are in the National Honor Society.  In some cases, students learn from one another better than from an adult.  Both options are available to HSFI students.

Tomorrow, December 7, is a First Monday bell schedule.  As you know with a First Monday schedule, students will be dismissed from school early and our staff will be meeting in teacher teams for professional development.  First period classes begin at 8:30 am.  Second period classes begin at 9:09 am.  Students who finish school after 8th period will be dismissed at 1:43 pm.  Students who finish school after 9th period will be dismissed at 2:22 pm.

As I contacted you this past week, HSFI was selected by the NYC Department of Education as a new SING school.  SING is a fun and exciting musical competition show that is written, produced, performed and designed by the students.  Students can get involved in SING in the following ways: set & costume design, dancing, singing, acting, musical performance, script & songwriting, and marketing.   If you child is interested in participating in SING, encourage them to complete the survey I sent to them through Jupiter Grades and their HSFI email.  SING is a totally student run production, but we certainly can use parent help in guiding our students – if you are interested in helping out, please complete the following survey that is below on this email and in the HSFI Parents section of the website:

Just a reminder about the generous donation of top-designer glasses frames from the Council for Fashion Designers of America through the HSFI Advisory Board, the Falcon Health Center and Manhattan Eyeworks.  Students should visit the health center to let them know they are interested in these frames and do a vision screening.

Thank you!

FASHIONABLE TIMES Principal's Message 11.15

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  Please make sure you continue to check out The Fashionable Times Blog where we will include all the important information you need as Fashion parents.  The website link is: http://hsfifashionabletimes.blogspot.com/

Posted on the school website are the just released High School Quality Snapshot and School Quality Guide based on the ‘Framework for Great Schools.’  These reports have replaced the school report card that previously existed where HSFI received seven consecutive years of ‘A’ grades.  The bottom line of the report is that we received the highest possible rating for ‘Student Achievement’ – the core of the ‘Framework for Great Schools.’  The quality of this report is because HSFI staff, parents and students have worked together to build a wonderful learning community.  HSFI is a great team that works hard and works thoughtfully.  Thank you for all your efforts towards this achievement!

Between daily assignments, college essays and Common Core tasks, our students need additional access to computers and the ability to print.  We now have computer and printer access for students in the morning before school starts in the library; during all lunch periods in the student lounge; and after school in a computer lab.  This computer and printer access is every day before school, during school and after school.

This week we look forward to welcoming all Fashion families into the building for our monthly Parents’ Association meeting and Parent-Teacher Conferences.  As you are planning your schedule for the week I hope you can attend our November Parents Association meeting this Wednesday, November 18 at 6:00 pm in Room 829.

We are very excited to welcome you to Fashion this week with Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November 19 and Friday, November 20.  Thursday’s conferences will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.  Friday’s conferences will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  Friday there will be a half day of school.

FASHIONABLE TIMES Principal's Message 11.7

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  Please make sure you continue to check out The Fashionable Times Blog where we will include all the important information you need as Fashion parents.  The website link is: http://hsfifashionabletimes.blogspot.com/

This week I want to highlight our Fashion Dollars system where students earn these HSFI rewards for positive behavior.  Fashion Dollars are now a valuable commodity at HSFI where students can earn privileges like going out to lunch and being Principal for a Day.  The top ten Fashion Dollar earners each week are invited to a weekly after school celebration – so far we had an ice cream and Chipolte party.  Some examples of Fashion Dollars rewards includes all students who turned in their lunch applications got 100 Fashion Dollars; students on time to school receive 5 Fashion Dollars each day; and students whose families attend Parents Association meetings receive 50 Fashion Dollars for each meeting attended.

Last week you should have received a text from our School Messenger service that asked you if you wanted to receive texts from the school.  Approximately 300 HSFI families have signed up for this service.  I urge all families to opt-in to this text messaging service because this feature can serve as an efficient tool to keep you up to date with important events and reminders.  We promise to not overuse this feature and only use the text messages for important reminders.

If you have further questions about this text messaging service, please contact Danielle Silva, Assistant Principal of Family Engagement at 212-255-1235 ext. 2015 or DSilva3@schools.nyc.gov

Make sure you are consistently checking Jupiter Grades to get updates on your child’s performance in their classes.  In addition, you can receive progress reports and important announcements from teachers if your email is connected to the Jupiter Grades system.  If you have not already done so, please connect your email to Jupiter Grades.

Thank you!
