The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 1.28.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.

There is no school for students tomorrow, Monday, January 29.  The Spring term for students begins on Tuesday, January 30.  Students are to report to school at 8:45 am and go to their OP (Organizational Period) classroom.  Students will receive their Fall term report card, their Student transcript, their Spring schedule and Spring term Metrocard.  There will be regular classes on Tuesday beginning Period 3 immediately after their OP.  Students will finish school at the regular time.  Students who finish the school day after 8th period are done at 2:47 pm.  Students who finish the school day after 9th period are done at 3:37 pm.

I need your immediate help regarding the redesign of our First Monday of the month schedule that I contacted you about last week.  Only about half the students in the school have signed up for a First Monday activity – I need you to immediately direct your child to fill out the First Monday survey that I have sent to them multiple times where they can choose their activities for these First Mondays.  This needs to be done immediately as spots are being given on a first come, first serve basis.  As you know, on the First Monday of each month (except for September) we have a special schedule where students leave school earlier than normal in order for our teaching staff to participate in professional development.  I am looking to redesign how students spend our First Mondays beginning on February 5.  The redesign involves students participating in educational activities where students would select from a menu of activities based on their personal interests.  Some of the areas that these activities cover are Arts & Culture; Creative Expression; Designing Your Future; Film; Fun & Games; Mind and Body; and Social Responsibility.

A list of the proposed activities is right below in this email.  Click the following link to review the choices and eligibility requirements: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s0f1R2vhv8uT_eLFWlrXXi5u4JTeaQ02A18iivup9c8/edit?usp=sharing

The list is also posted on the school website.  Please feel free to contact me about your thoughts about this proposal and thank you as always for your support.

We are always looking for Parent Volunteers to help us.  The HSFI Parents Association has decided to do monthly bake sales to raise money for the organization and they need help for these fundraisers.  The bake sales will go from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm on the following dates: Tuesday, February 13; Friday, March 23; Friday, April 27; and Friday, May 25.  If you are able to volunteer, please contact Assistant Principal Danielle Silva at 212-255-1235 ext. 1251 or email Ms. Silva at dsilva@hsfi.us

It is critically important that all HSFI students check their HSFI email & Jupiter Grades everyday.  We will be sending important information out through these tools – if students do not check them, they will miss out on some valuable opportunities and not know what is going on in the school.

Thank you!

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 1.21.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.

January Regents will take place from this Monday, January 22 through Friday, January 26.  Check with your child about whether or not they are scheduled to take any exams – Regents exam invitations have been distributed to students.  If students do not have Regents exams, they do not report to school.  A large majority of our students do not have Regents exams – all 11th graders are taking the English Regents and students who previously were not successful on exams or want to get a higher grade, have the opportunity to take exams again.

When students come to school for these Regents exams they should bring: (1) Exam ticket (2) Student identification card and (3) 2 pencils and 2 pens.  It is important that students DO NOT BRING ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT INTO THEIR TESTING ROOM. We tell students to put their electronic equipment in their lockers before their exam.  The presence of this electronic equipment with your child will result in their score being invalidated and given a 0 on the exam.  This electronic equipment policy is New York State law.  Please contact anyone of our Assistant Principals—Ms. Moore (English); Mr. Kohm (Math); Mr. Rodrigues (Social Studies); Ms. Frank (Science) - if you have any specific questions about these exams.  If your child does not have an exam on a particular day, they do not have to report to school on that day.

The Spring term starts on Tuesday, January 30.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 1.1.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.  I want to wish you and your families a Happy New Year for 2018!  I wish you and your family health and happiness!

We have 3 full weeks of school until the Fall term ends.  The grades that teachers submit at the end of January are the grades that colleges and universities will see.  Make sure your child finishes the semester strong – students should take advantage of staff tutoring and tutoring from our National Honor Society students that are available every day to help out their classmates.

January Regents will take place from Monday, January 22 through Friday, January 26.  Check with your child about whether or not they are scheduled to take any exams – Regents exam invitations will be distributed to students very soon.
