The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 12.17.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

This is the last week of school until our Winter Break – every day of instruction is important so make sure students are making them count!  All students come back to school on Tuesday, January 2.  Once we get back from vacation, we will have 3 full weeks of school until the Fall term ends where teachers submit their final grades that colleges and universities will see.  January Regents will take place the week of January 22.

It was great to see so many parents at HSFI this past week for our Holiday Windows Unveiling Ceremony as part of our partnership with Barney’s NY.  I recommend that you try to come by the school to see these windows that represent the Fashion Capitals of the World.

Just a reminder that we have begun a Fashion Dollars Bonus Program for students who are on time to school.  All students are eligible for the Fashion Dollar Bonus Program. For each day students are on time to school (as determined by them swiping in with their ID card each morning), they will receive $5 Fashion Dollars.  But wait, there's more!  For each day in a row they are on time, they will receive bonus Fashion Dollars. The more students are on time, the more Fashion Dollars they will receive.

We are always looking for Parent Volunteers to help us.  If you are able to volunteer, please contact Assistant Principal Danielle Silva at 212-255-1235 ext. 1251 or email Ms. Silva at dsilva@hsfi.us

As you may know we are spending a lot of energy and resources on developing a positive school environment – I need your help - please take a moment to fill in this online survey about your thoughts on HSFI’s school environment.  Taking the survey would be greatly appreciated.  Your child can bring proof of the completed survey (a selfie or confirmation print out) to their major teacher and 50 Fashion Dollars will be deposited into their school account. Thank you so much for taking the time to help us constantly improve our schools climate – we will be examining the results of the survey to help improve our school.  Here is the link to the survey – the link to the survey is also in the ‘Fashion Parents’ section of the school website:

Thank you.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 12.10.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

Report cards for the second marking period were distributed to students on Friday.  If your child did not show you their report card, ask them to show it to you immediately.  We are in the third marking period of the term – you need to understand that the grades your children receive at the end of January will be the grades that will go on their transcripts and be seen by colleges.  In exciting news, 789 HSFI students earned either Honor Roll (85-89) or Principal Honor Roll (90-100) status for the 2nd Marking Period – that represents 49.2 % of our school population – very impressive!

One of our showcase events of the school year is taking place this week - our Holiday Windows Unveiling is this Thursday, December 14.  This windows unveiling is part of our partnership with Barney’s New York and their Creative Ambassador Simon Doonan.  The unveiling in at 6:00 pm in the school lobby.  All Fashion Families are welcome to attend!  Our Fashion Design students have the Fashion Show, our Graphics and Illustration students have the Senior Art Show and this showcase event is a big deal for our Visual Merchandising students.

This coming Monday, December 11, we are beginning a Fashion Dollars Bonus Program for students who are on time to school. I’m very excited to share with you that the High School of Fashion Industries was featured last Sunday in the New York Times as one of the few schools that teach ‘old school’ black and white analog photography.  We are getting some great media attention this school year – first, the NY1 television segment on our Advanced Placement Computer Science program and now this New York Times articles about our Photography program – here is the link:

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 11.19.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  It was great to see HSFI families at the November Parents Association meeting this past Wednesday.

We have a short week this week with the Thanksgiving holiday.  I want to wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday – enjoy the time with your families and friends!

The NYC DOE just released the School Quality Snapshot for all New York City public schools (this report has replaced the old School Progress Report where schools were given letter grades – this is no longer done) – attached and on the school website is our report – the report is based off ‘The Framework for Great Schools’ that identifies successful schools as having six essential characteristics: (1) Rigorous Instruction; (2) Supportive Environment; (3) Collaborative teachers; (4) Strong Family-Community Ties; (5) Effective School Leadership; and (6) Trust.  The theory of action is that strong results in each of these categories will result in ‘Student Achievement.’

HSFI had another strong report, yet there is always room for improvement in each area. I wanted to note our improvement in all the ‘College and Career Readiness’ categories:
+11 % increase in HSFI students graduating College Ready (from 48% to 59%)
+7 % increase in HSFI students graduating from high school and enrolling in college or other postsecondary program within 6 months (from 72% to 79%)
+5 % increase in HSFI students successfully completing an approved college or career preparatory course and exam (from 81% to 86%)
We are headed in the right direction – we just need to keep up the hard and thoughtful work.

We are always looking for Parent Volunteers to help us.  This week on Tuesday, November 21, our school is holding a Pep Rally that includes a ‘Staff vs. Student’ Volleyball game as well as performances from our Dance and Stunts teams – we could use parent volunteers to help supervise and sell snacks.  On Monday, December 4 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in our Student Lounge we will be having our annual Blood Drive – if you are interested in donating blood, please come by.  Students will receive 500 Fashion Dollars for each family member that donates blood.  If you are able to volunteer at one of the events above, please contact Danielle Silva at 212-255-1235 ext. 1251 or email Ms. Silva at dsilva@hsfi.us

We are very excited to welcome you to Fashion this week for Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November 9 and Friday, November 10.  Thursday’s conferences will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.  Friday’s conferences will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  Friday there will be a half day of school.

All students and their families still need to submit lunch applications.  You can now fill out your lunch application online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/.  If you do not want to do the lunch application online, we have paper copies of the application all throughout the school building.  The easiest place for your child to pick up a paper lunch application is in the school lobby when they arrive to school or in the school’s main office in Room 125.  All paper applications should be returned to the school’s main office in Room 125.  I hate to bother you about these lunch applications, but they are necessary to get the much needed funding for the school.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.29.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

It was great to see so many HSFI Families at Parent Visitation Days this past Thursday and Friday – these are two of my favorite days of the school year.  HSFI families are invited back to HSFI for Parent Teacher Conferences next Thursday and Friday, November 9 and 10.

If you have not already seen HSFI featured on NY1 for our success with our students in Advanced Placement Computer Science, please view this clip – the link is below and also posted on the school website in the Fashion News section.  We have great major classes like Fashion Design, Graphics and Illustration, Visual Merchandising and Fashion Marketing, but this video shows that we also have great academics.

Students will receive their report cards on Monday.  We are now in the second marking period.  You and your child need to understand that student grades are cumulative, meaning that all grades count during a given term.  Grades do not start over with the second marking period and there are not separate grades for each marking period.  Second marking period grades are a combination of the first and second marking periods.  Third marking period grades and the grades that go on a student’s transcript and seen by colleges are a combination of the first, second and third marking periods.

HSFI is thrilled to continue again this year our Family Visitation Days this Thursday, October 26 and Friday, October 27, 2017. During HSFI Family Visitation Days, you will be able to observe your children in action in their classes.  You may come and leave when you wish during those days.  During your child’s lunch period, you and your child are invited to lunch in the Principal’s conference room.  Assistant Principal Danielle Silva will be welcoming you in the school lobby and giving you an orientation for the visit.  We want to get an idea of how many parents will be visiting and let the teachers know you are coming, so please register online that you will be attending by using the below survey link.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.15.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

As you are planning your schedule for the week, I hope you can attend our October Parents Association meeting this Wednesday, October 18 at 6:00 pm in the school auditorium.  At this meeting we will have our annual Financial Aid night.  This informational session is for parents of all grades whether you are the parent of a senior going to college next year or a parent of a 9th, 10th or 11th grader.

HSFI is thrilled to continue again this year our Family Visitation Days on Thursday, October 26 and Friday, October 27, 2017. Attached is the flier for our Parent Visitation opportunities:

This Monday is our annual College T-Shirt Day.  A large majority of our staff will be wearing a t-shirt, sweatshirt or some sort of gear from the college that they attended.  The day will hopefully have a motivating effect on our seniors who are beginning to work on their college applications and get our 9th, 10th and 11th graders thinking about the college process.

Please be aware that with new NYC Department of Education procedures it will take 3 days to get a replacement Metro Card if students lose or misplace their MetroCard.  Families will be responsible for your child’s transportation for the 3 days that it will take to get the replacement Metro Card.  The moral of the story – students should take care of their Metro Card!!!

The organizational school planners are in - they are available in the FLY school store.  The planners cost $4.00.  We had approximately 200 students pre-order a planner – until Wednesday, the planners will only be sold to the students who pre-ordered them.  After Wednesday, all students can purchase planners on a first come, first serve basis.  The $4 price will be the same.

Thank you

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.9.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

First, thank you for your cooperation in supporting a student in distress this past week.  Please let someone at the school know if your child is having any sort of difficulty – whether it is in classes understanding what is being covered in class or having problems getting along with other students or just not feeling well.  We are here to help and will do whatever we can to support them.

I wanted to clarify the timing for the Lateness Plan.  For 1st period on regular schedule, students need to be in the school building by 8:15 am (5 minutes after the music stops playing) to NOT be considered late.  If students arrive to school after 8:15 am and have a first period class, students will be subject to the lateness plan.  For 2nd period on regular schedule, students need to be in the school building by 9:04 am (5 minutes after the music stops playing) to NOT be considered late.  If students arrive to school after 9:04 am and have a second period class, students will be subject to the lateness plan.  Right now, students’ work job in life is to be a student - students need to be ON TIME to work.  We are doing right by students with this lateness plan - in the future if they are consistently late in college, they will fail college classes that you are paying for - in the future if they are consistently late to work, they will be fired from their job.  As always, we will check train delays and cancel the plan based on transit delays.

The organizational school planners are in - they will be available on Tuesday in the FLY school store.  The planners cost $4.00.  We had approximately 200 students pre-order a planner - the planners at this time will only be sold to the students who pre-ordered them.  I ordered additional copies - once this group of students purchase these planners, we will make the extra copies available for purchase to additional students.  The $4 price will be the same.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.1.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

This Monday marks the first ‘First Monday’ where students will start school later and be dismissed from school early so that our staff can meet in teacher teams for professional development.  Students who begin school 1st period will start at 8:30 am.  Students who begin school 2nd period will start at 9:09 am.  Students who finish school after 8th period will be dismissed at 1:43 pm.  Students who finish school after 9th period will be dismissed at 2:22 pm.

Also tomorrow, October 2 at 1:20 pm, we will be conducting a soft lockdown drill.  These mandatory drills are conducted four times a year in an effort to promote student safety and heighten school community preparedness in the event of a real lockdown.  The drill will last approximately twenty minutes.  During the drill, students will be expected to maintain silence and remain out of sight with classroom lights turned off.  Additionally, access to restrooms and hallways will be restricted.  Youth officers from the 10th Precinct, along with school safety agents will assist school administration in checking that all classroom and exterior doors are locked and secure.  Once the drill has concluded, students will then resume their normal schedules and activities in their classrooms. Please take a moment to discuss the importance of this drill with your child.

This past Thursday and Friday, we held our annual Student Club Fair with over 35 clubs and activities presenting.  If your child did not get to attend the Club Fair, the list of clubs and activities along with the staff members that supervise them and the rooms you can find them has been sent to students via Jupiter Grades and HSFI email.  That list is on the school website and below on this for HSFI parents.
