The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 3.25.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.

It was great to see so many families at our annual Variety Show this past Friday.  This event showcased the performing arts talents of our students including singing and dancing.

We are 4 school days away from our Spring Break – our vacation starts this Friday.

On Monday, NYC Department of Education Deputy Chancellor Phil Weinberg will be visiting HSFI all morning to see our students in action, speak with our teachers and see our SAGA math tutoring program in action.

As part of our commitment to Social-Emotional Learning, we are teaching our students something called the ‘Meta-Moment.’  The ‘Meta-Moment’ is focused on you imagining your ‘best self’ and then thinking about this ‘best self’ before responding to stress.  The culmination of introducing the ‘Meta-Moment’ to both students and staff will be this Thursday, March 29th (the day before Spring Break) where we will have ‘Dress Like Your Best Self’ Day – our hope is that all students and staff participate in ‘Dress Like Your Best Self’ Day.  Please encourage your children to participate in ‘Dress Like Your Best Self’ Day.  I believe that this time spent on Social Emotional Learning is time well spent and will pay off handsomely in getting our students ready for college, career and the real world!

As I called and emailed you all this week, we need all Fashion Families to complete the NYC Department of Education Parent Survey.  The deadline is this coming Friday, March 29.  I will be sending phone calls all this week as reminders – I apologize to all the families that have already completed the survey – I have no way to know who completed the survey and who did not.  Our goal is that 100% of Fashion Families complete the survey!

You can fill out the survey in 2 different ways – by filling out the paper survey that you received in the mail in a green envelope or you can fill it out online.

To complete the survey online:
(1) Go to nycschoolsurvey.org.
(2) Click on the link to the parent and guardian survey.
(3) Enter your Access Code found at the bottom of your paper survey.
(4) Complete the survey.
(5) Click ‘Submit’.

If you don’t have a survey? Don’t worry! Attached to the email and on the school website is an attachment of every parent’s Access Code.  You can find the Access Code by using your child’s 9 digit number – you will not find your child’s name for privacy concerns.  You will find your child’s grade and OP (homeroom).

You can also call the school where we can give out your Access Code or call the NYC Department of Education at 1-877-819-2363 to get an Access Code to complete the survey online.

HSFI parents’ participation in these NYC Department of Education surveys mean a tremendous amount to me, so please complete the survey to reflect our efforts to make the High School of Fashion Industries the best school possible!

Please consider how we work to build partnerships and relationships with you as Fashion Parents to help your children learn, perform to their highest levels and meet their needs inside and outside the classroom.  Students’ needs are met academically through challenging instruction and industry partnerships connected to our fashion, art and business major classes; social-emotionally through all our clubs and activities, Fashion Dollars and our partnership with Yale University; and health-wise with our School Based Health Center that provides free health and dental care to all Fashion students.

Please consider all our communication efforts – my weekly Sunday at 5:00 pm phone calls and emails through School Messenger; our use of Jupiter Grades for messages and updating you on your child’s grades; our maintenance of a private website along with social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; and an Assistant Principal specifically devoted to Family Engagement and who makes sure all parent communication with the school is followed up on.

Please consider our weekly invitations for you to volunteer at the school.  Please consider our Family Visitation Days in the Fall and Spring where families are invited into the school to observe classes and see your children and our teachers in action.  Please consider our invitations to you to attend student performances like our SING musical production and the Holiday Windows Unveiling with Barneys NY – these invitations will heat up in the Spring with our annual Fashion Show, the International Center of Photography exhibit and our Senior Art Show.

To enhance our safety and security at HSFI, we are instituting early morning times for students to enter the school building.  The earliest time students will be allowed in the building is 7:20 am – by this time, there will be a supervisor and security agents in the building.  Please plan accordingly.

Thank you!

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 3.18.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.

It was great to see so many families at our Family Visitation Days this past Thursday and Friday.  I hope you can attend our March Parents Association meeting this Wednesday, March 21 at 6:00 pm in Room 829.

Thank you for all your support with the National School Walkout this past Wednesday – it was awesome to see our students speak out.  Here is a great video of our students protesting during the National School Walkout featured on Democracy Now.  This video and photos are also posted on the school website.

This Wednesday, March 21 is PSAT / SAT Day.  This is a day when all 10th graders will be taking the PSAT exam while all of the 11th graders will be taking their SAT exam.  A majority of our 9th graders that have handed in their college trip permission slips will be attending college visits.  The remaining 9th graders will be joining the 12th graders to watch a special presentation of the film 'Girls Rising' in the school auditorium.  All students report to school at 8:00 am on Wednesday.  There are no regular classes on this day.

I am very excited to announce that HSFI’s version of ‘America’s Got Talent’ is this Friday, March 23 with our annual Variety Show.  This event showcases the performing arts talents of our students including singing and dancing.  As always, we welcome families to attend the event.

As I called and emailed you last night, I just received a message from the NYC Department of Education that only 3 percent of Fashion Families have done their Parent Survey – that is only 47 HSFI families.  The deadline is this coming Friday, March 23.  Please fill out the survey – we need a high percentage of Fashion families to fill out the survey and show all of NYC what HSFI is all about.

You can fill out the survey in 2 different ways – by filling out the paper survey that you received in the mail in a green envelope or you can fill it out online.

The Fashionable TImes Blog Principal's Message 3.11.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.

This week we are very excited to welcome HSFI parents to our Family Visitation Days on Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March 16.  During HSFI Family Visitation Days, you will be able to observe your children in action in their classes.  You may come and leave when you wish during those days.  During your child’s lunch period, you and your child are invited to lunch in the Principal’s conference room.  Assistant Principal Danielle Silva will be welcoming you in the school lobby and giving you an orientation for the visit.  Use the website link below to fill out an online survey where you sign up for our Family Visitation Day.

This Wednesday, March 14, many students are planning to participate in what is being called “#ENOUGH National School Walkout” to be held on Wednesday at 10:00am to commemorate the 17 victims from horrific school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on February 14.  The walkout is scheduled to be 17 minutes long.  While we support students participating in civic engagement and exercising their First Amendment rights, we want to remind you that regular classroom schedules will continue as usual.  We want to create an environment inside the school for students who choose not to participate. Our ultimate goal is to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment for all students at all times.  We will send you more details on our preparation for the walkout before Wednesday.  On the school website is a letter from Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina about the walkout.

It is NYC Department of Education Parent Survey time.  These surveys have been sent out in the mail and you should have received them by now.  I am asking that all HSFI families please complete the survey – it would be amazing if every family completed the survey.  I would be so grateful if you filled out the survey to reflect all the hard work that I, along with my staff, put into making HSFI a unique learning community.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 3.4.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.  This Monday marks the beginning of the second marking period of the Spring term.  Report cards for the first marking period will be distributed to students on Wednesday.

We are very excited to welcome HSFI parents to Fashion this week for Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10, Thursday’s conferences will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.  Friday’s conferences will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

The morning of afternoon Parent-Teacher conferences on Friday, we will be holding our annual Career Day for the students of the High School of Fashion Industries.  During this morning session, we have over 60 guest speakers who will visit our school to share their experiences with our students.  The speakers will cover career opportunities among all 4 of our majors – Fashion Design, Graphics & Illustration, Fashion Marketing and Visual Merchandising.  Please make sure that your child attends Career Day – it is very important in their preparation for college and career.  Career Day is brought to the school by the Advisory Board of the High School of Fashion Industries

Next week, HSFI is thrilled to continue again this year our Family Visitation Days on Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March 16. This week I will be sending you the website link to the online survey where you can let us know that you be coming to Family Visitation Day.

Tomorrow, Monday, March 5, we will have our second installment of our new First Monday program.  The redesign of our First Monday involves students participating in educational activities where students selected from a menu of activities based on their personal interests.  Some of the areas that these activities cover are Arts & Culture; Creative Expression; Designing Your Future; Film; Fun & Games; Mind and Body; and Social Responsibility.  All students have been assigned an activity based on their choices; there is no changing of activities at this time.

Students report to school at 8:30 am where they will take attendance in their 3rd period classes and fill out their NYC Department of Education survey.  From there, students will move onto their First Monday activity that will last until approximately 11:30 am.  At this point, students will be able to get lunch.  From 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm, students will have an opportunity to have individual conferences with their teachers and/or receive tutoring from them.  The school day will officially end at 1:15 pm when HSFI teachers will then begin their professional development activities.

Thank you!
