The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 2.28.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.  Please make sure you continue to check out The Fashionable Times Blog where we will include all the important information you need as Fashion parents.  The website link is: http://hsfifashionabletimes.blogspot.com/

It is important for you to know that the first marking period of the Spring term is on Tuesday, March 1.  Report cards will be distributed next week before Parent-Teacher Conferences that will take place next Thursday and Friday, March 10 and 11.  The night conferences are from 5:30 pm – 8 pm on Thursday, March 10.  The afternoon conferences are from 1 pm – 3 pm on Friday, March 11.

This week on Wednesday, March 2 we will be administering for free the SAT to all 11th graders and PSAT to all 12th graders.  HSFI is one of the select schools in NYC that is offering this free administration of the SAT.   A large majority of our 9th graders will be on college trips and our seniors will be in the auditorium for a special presentation.

As you all know, the main goal of the High School of Fashion Industries is to prepare our students for life after HSFI.  We have identified that one of the main problems in our school are students coming late on a regular basis.  We know that ‘NYC Happens’ and students will occasionally come late due to mass transit issues.  Unfortunately, we have a large number of students that consistently come late to school.  This lateness results in students missing important instructional time that can result in low grades, failing grades and/or poor exam results.  If this lateness continues later on in life, our students will be fired from their jobs.  We are going to be instituting a plan that will hopefully result in students coming on time to their classes.

Here are the key parts of this lateness plan:
● Late students will sit in the auditorium for the duration of the class period that they are late to under the supervision of a HSFI staff member
● Guidance counselors will be providing immediate phone notification to all parents / guardians of the students held in the auditorium that are consistently late
● This plan will take place randomly on 1-2 school days during a given school week
● This plan will take place during periods 1 and 2 only
● For Period 1 – students will be held in the auditorium if they arrive to school after 8:15 am
(8:10 am is the beginning of Period 1 – students will be given these 5 extra minutes to get to class)
● For Period 2 – students will be held in the auditorium if they arrive to school after 9:09 am
(9:04 am is the beginning of Period 2 – students will be given these 5 extra minutes to get to class)

This plan was shared with and approved by HSFI parents at our Parents Association and School Leadership Team meetings that took place this past Wednesday.  The plan will be shared with students every day this week during their classes.   The official letter to HSFI families is attached below.

Thank you

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 2.21.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.  I hope your child enjoyed the vacation.  It is time to get back to work as classes begin again.  Monday is a regular school day.

This week we look forward to welcoming all Fashion families into the building for our monthly Parents’ Association meeting.  As you are planning your schedule for the week I hope you can attend our February Parents Association meeting this Wednesday, February 24 at 6:00 pm in Room 829.   Please be aware that the Chancellor is having an Educational Panel meeting in our auditorium at the same time tonight.  There will be increased security at the school, but the Chancellor’s presence should not have any impact on your ability to get into the school in a timely manner.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 1.24.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.  I hope you all safe and sound with the unbelievable blizzard.  Tomorrow, Monday, January 25 is the last day of the Fall term and all students are expected to be in attendance.  Regents & RCT exams begin on Tuesday, January 26.

The start time of the Regents & RCT exams are 8:45 am for morning exams and 12:45 pm for afternoon exams.  Please make sure your child is on time to the exams.  If they arrive too late, they will not be allowed to take the exam.

Students have been distributed exam invitations – they are required to bring these invitations to all of their exams.  Students will not be allowed to take their examination without this invitation or a school identification card.

It is important that students DO NOT BRING ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT to the room they are taking their exam in.  Students who bring their electronic equipment to school, must put them in their lockers or give it to a school supervisor.  Any student who is found to be in possession of an electronic device during testing will be given a 0 on that exam and will not be allowed to take any other examinations during the testing week.  Let me repeat, any student who is found to be in possession of an electronic device during testing will be given a 0 on that exam and will not be allowed to take any other examinations during the testing week.

If a student does not have any Regents or RCT exams (this applies to most 9th graders), they do not have to come back to school until Tuesday, February 2, when the Spring 2016 term begins.

This is an important message about MetroCard distribution for the Spring semester.  Students’ current fall MetroCards will expire on January 31st and will not be valid on the 1st day of the Spring Semester, Tuesday, February 2.  Students may come to the school and pick up their Spring MetroCard on Friday, January 29 from 10:00 am to Noon.  Staff will be available in the auditorium to distribute cards only during this time.   Any student who is unable to come to Fashion on January 29 will receive their MetroCard on Tuesday, February 2 and will have to pay their way to come to school on February 2.

The school cafeteria will still be serving breakfast and lunch during Regents.  Breakfast hours remain the same from 7:15 am  to 8:45 am.  Lunch will be offered from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.

Please make sure you continue to check out The Fashionable Times Blog where we will include all the important information you need as Fashion parents.  The website link is: http://hsfifashionabletimes.blogspot.com/

Thank you and good luck to your children taking their exams!

We have 5 days of school until the Fall term ends – 4 days this week and next Monday.  The grades that teachers submit are the grades that colleges and universities will see.  Make sure your child finishes the semester strong as there will be many final exams and projects due this week – students should take advantage of staff tutoring and tutoring from our National Honor Society students that are available everyday to help out their classmates.

As you plan your monthly schedule, please make note of this Wednesday, January 20 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm when we have our annual Financial Aid night.  This informational session is for parents of all grades whether you are the parent of a senior going to college next year or a parent of a 9th, 10th or 11th grader.  On February 2, we will be providing individual financial aid support to families of seniors who want help on their financial aid forms that they will need to submit on behalf of their children.

January Regents will take place from Tuesday, January 26 through Friday, January 29.  Check with your child about whether or not they are scheduled to take any exams – Regents exam invitations have been distributed to students.

Thank you.
