The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 11.18.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

It was an exciting week at the High School of Fashion Industries between the Holiday Windows unveiling as part of our partnership with Barney’s New York and our SING musical performance this past Friday.  In addition, our senior Fashion Marketing students won the first round of their Virtual Enterprises business plan competition.  This week is Spirit Week where students can dress up each day under specific themes: Monday is Disney/Superhero Day; Tuesday is Twin Day; Wednesday is ‘Wear Pink’ Day; Thursday is ‘Jersey/ Sports’ Day and Friday is ‘Grade Day.’

Every week I am going to highlight the ways in which our HSFI families can volunteer to support the school.  We have 3 school committees going on this week where we would love to have parent representation.
#1 - The Social Emotional Learning Committee is on Monday, December 19 from 9:00 am to 9:45 am in Room 821.  This committee’s primary purpose is to develop a comprehensive plan to have all members of the HSFI community appreciate that emotions matter and building up social-emotional intelligence will have a positive impact on engagement, relationships, health, decision-making and academic success.
#2 – The Positive Behavior Fashion Dollars Committee is on Tuesday, December 20 from 1:15 pm to 2:00 pm in Room 821.  The primary purpose of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Committee is to examine how the Fashion Dollars programs can support students’ performance at the High School of Fashion Industries.
#3 – The Academic / Career & Technical Education Committee is on Thursday, December 22 from 10:40 am to 11:25 am in Room 821.  The primary purpose of the Academic and Career and Technical Education Committee is to examine the impact of our homework policy on students’ academic performance at the High School of Fashion Industries.
Please just come to these committees if you are interested in attending.

The student government has two events on Thursday, December 22, that we could use help with.  First, is Henna Day where we have some students doing henna for their classmates.  We need assistance selling tickets and monitoring participation – the time frame is from 10:30 am – 2:00 pm.  The second is the HSFI Showcase where our performance groups including our dance teams will be presenting their skills in the auditorium from 3:45 pm until 5:30 pm. We need ticket collectors, ushers and ticket sales help.  Please email me directly at dblank@schools.nyc.gov if you are able to volunteer your time and efforts to these events.

We have a full week of school this week until our Winter Break – every day of instruction is important so make sure students are making them count!  Once we get back from vacation, we will have 3 full weeks of school until the Fall term ends; teachers submit their final grades that colleges and universities will see; and January Regents will take place from Tuesday, January 26 through Friday, January 29.

Make sure you and your child are checking Jupiter Grades to know where they stand in their classes.  Students should be checking their HSFI email every day.

School will reopen on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.  Thank you!

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 12.11.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

We have an exciting week ahead with multiple student showcases.

First up is our Holiday Windows unveiling this Wednesday, December 14.  This windows unveiling is part of our partnership with Barney’s New York and their Creative Ambassador Simon Doonan.  The unveiling in at 6:00 pm in the school lobby.  Our Fashion Design students have the Fashion Show, our Graphics and Illustration students have the Senior Art Show and this showcase event is a big deal for our Visual Merchandising students.

Then on Friday, December 16, it would be wonderful if you and your family could attend our SING musical performance.  SING is a fun and exciting musical competition show that is written, produced, performed and designed by our students.  Students are involved in SING in many different ways including set & costume design, dancing, singing, acting, musical performance, script & songwriting, and marketing. There are two shows this Friday, one at 4:30 pm and the other at 7:30 pm.  Our SING Coordinator, Ms. Vega, and our students have been rehearsing non-stop and we need to support their efforts – bring friends and families as we celebrate the performing arts at HSFI!

Every week I am going to highlight the ways in which our HSFI families can volunteer to support the school.  Next week, the student government has two events on Thursday, December 22, that we could use help with.

We have been working on developing a Homework Policy for the school.  At HSFI, community members – students, parents and staff – do well when there is consistency among our policies.  Please go to the school website to view the policy and there is a link to a survey where you can give your comments on the policy if you wish.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 12.4.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

This Tuesday, December 6, is the end of the second marking period.  Students will receive their report cards next week.  You and your child need to understand that student grades are cumulative, meaning that all grades count during a given term.  Second marking period grades are a combination of the first and second marking periods.  Third marking period grades which are the grades that go on a student’s transcript and seen by colleges, are a combination of the first, second and third marking periods.

As you are planning your schedule for the week, I hope you can attend our December Parents Association meeting this Wednesday, December 7 at 6:00 pm in Room 829.

Next Friday, December 16, it would be wonderful if you and your family could attend our SING musical performance.  SING is a fun and exciting musical competition show that is written, produced, performed and designed by the students.  Students are involved in SING in many different ways including set & costume design, dancing, singing, acting, musical performance, script & songwriting, and marketing. The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 11.27.17

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

I want to showcase a chance for HSFI families to volunteer at the school and our Social Emotional Learning committee that takes place on Monday from 9:00 am to 9:45 am in Room 821.  This committee is focused on our school-wide belief that emotions matters and that paying attention to the emotions of our staff, students and families will have a positive impact on engagement, relationships, health, decision-making and academic success.  Our school will be doing a lot of work around Social Emotional Learning this year and in the future. We are partnering with Yale University on this work as I and a group of HSFI teachers attended a Social Emotional Learning conference at Yale University this past summer.

If you are interested in volunteering and being part of the committee, please just show up.  Again, the committee meeting will take place on Monday from 9:00 am to 9:45 am in Room 821.  This committee will meet every month and I will let HSFI families know when it will take place.  In my weekly messages, I will be updating you on the school’s progress around Social Emotional Learning.

Next Tuesday, December 6, is the end of the second marking period.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 11.20.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

Thank you to all the families that were able to attend Parent Teacher Conferences and our November Parents Association meeting.  If you were not able to make it to these conferences and you need to speak with a teacher, please contact Ms. Danielle Silva, Assistant Principal of Family Engagement & Admissions and she will make a connection with the teacher for you.  Ms. Silva's contact information is 212-255-1235 ext.1255 or DSilva3@schools.nyc.gov

I hope you had a chance to look at the results of our School Quality Report published by the NYC Department of Education.  This report is the equivalent of the School Report Cards that used to be given to schools.  We achieved EXCELLENCE in Student Achievement which is the bottom-line measure of the report.  The link to this report is posted on the school website at www.fashionhighschool.net

Obviously, there is always work to be done, but this is a moment to celebrate for the entire HSFI community – students, parents and staff members.  Hard work and effort do pay off!  Thank you for all your efforts – this is a HSFI TEAM success!

Finally, I want to wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday – enjoy the time with your families and friends!

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  This past Tuesday students received their first marking period report card – if you have not already done so, ask your child to see their report card.  Keep in mind that there is no school on Tuesday for Election Day (staff will be engaged in professional development) and on Friday in observance of Veteran’s Day.

This Monday is a ‘First Monday’ where students will start school later and be dismissed from school early so that our staff can meet in teacher teams for professional development.  Students who begin school 1st period will start at 8:30 am.  Students who begin school 2nd period will start at 9:09 am.  Students who finish school after 8th period will be dismissed at 1:43 pm.  Students who finish school after 9th period will be dismissed at 2:22 pm.

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  On Tuesday, students will be receiving their first marking period report card.  You and your child need to understand that student grades are cumulative, meaning that all grades count during a given term.  Grades do not start over with the second marking period and there are not separate grades for each marking period.  Second marking period grades are a combination of the first and second marking periods.  Third marking period grades and the grades that go on a student’s transcript and seen by colleges are a combination of the first, second and third marking periods.

Attached to the email and posted on the school website is a copy of HSFI’s Grading Policy.  All teacher grading policies should align to the school-wide policy.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.23.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  This Monday marks the beginning of the second marking period, so make sure your child starts off in strong fashion.  It was great to see so many parents at Financial Aid night this past Wednesday at our Parents Association meeting.

This week I would like to highlight the support of the Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer’s support of the High School of Fashion Industries.  Last year we received $500,000 dollars from President Brewer to air condition our school cafeteria and main office.  I am happy to report that the construction is complete and now our students get to enjoy the comforts of this central air.  I am especially psyched about the cafeteria as it gets hot in there with the kitchen.   This year, the Borough President gave us funds to upgrade our gymnasium.  As you see, we have a big fan in the Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer!

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.16.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  The first marking period ends this Friday.  Make sure you and your child are checking Jupiter Grades to know where they stand in their classes.  Your child should be checking their HSFI email every day.  Students should be getting in the habit of checking their HSFI email every day.

As you are planning your schedule for the week I hope you can attend our October Parents Association meeting this Wednesday, October 19 at 6:00 pm in Room 829.  At this meeting we will have our annual Financial Aid night.  This informational session is for parents of all grades whether you are the parent of a senior going to college next year or a parent of a 9th, 10th or 11th grader.

In very exciting news, the High School of Fashion Industries will be featured on the Rachel Ray Show on Monday, October 17th on ABC (Channel 7) at 10am.  The Rachel Ray staff did a much needed reorganization of our fabric room in the basement.

This Monday marks the first ‘First Monday’ where students will start school later and be dismissed from school early so that our staff can meet in teacher teams for professional development.  Students who begin school 1st period will start at 8:30 am.  Students who begin school 2nd period will start at 9:09 am.  Students who finish school after 8th period will be dismissed at 1:43 pm.  Students who finish school after 9th period will be dismissed at 2:22 pm.

On Monday, we will be conducting a soft lockdown drill.  These drills are conducted four times a year in an effort to promote student safety and heighten school community preparedness in the event of a real lockdown.  The drill will last approximately twenty minutes.  During the drill, students will be expected to maintain silence and remain out of sight with classroom lights turned off.  Youth Officers from the 10th Precinct, along with School Safety Agents will assist School Administration in checking that all classroom and exterior doors are locked and secure.  Once the drill has concluded, students will then resume their normal schedules and activities in their classrooms.  Please take a moment to discuss the importance of this exercise with your child.  We will email and call you before the drill takes place and after it is finished.

I am pleased to share with you another tool that HSFI has created to help support students who want some extra help – tutoring and mentoring from our National Honor Society students.  Every day we will have our very best students from the National Honor Society available after school to tutor and mentor their classmates.  All your child needs to do is go to the school library after school to receive this help.  Students can go after school whether they finish after 8th period or after 9th period.  This is in addition to the staff tutoring we have available to students.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.10.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  We are only 8 days away from the end of the first marking period.  Make sure you and your child are checking Jupiter Grades to know where they stand in their classes.  Your child should be checking their HSFI email every day.  Students should be getting in the habit of checking their HSFI email every day because they will lose out on many opportunities if they don’t do so.

If you have not done so yet, your child’s lunch application is now due.  I am pleased to announce that the deadline for submitting lunch applications is October 21.  After that date, if you have not returned your lunch application, students will have to pay the full price of $1.75 cents for lunch.  We still have close to 600 students who have not returned their application.  In addition, Title I funding in New York City is tied to the information that parents/guardians provide on the yearly lunch application.  The High School of Fashion Industries receives nearly $1 million in Title I funding each year.  You can now fill out your lunch application online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/

On the school website is a document that outlines the school committees that HSFI parents can participate in.  The committees include the Advocating & Preparing for Post-Secondary Success (APPS) Committee; the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (Fashion Dollars) Committee; the Academic & Career and Technical Education Accreditation Committee; the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Committee and the School Safety Committee.  Descriptions of the committees are on the document. The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 10.4.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  We have a short week this week.  Incredibly, we are already in October and only 11 days away from the end of the first marking period.  Make sure you and your child are checking Jupiter Grades to know where they stand in their classes.  Your child should be checking their HSFI email every day.  Students should be getting in the habit of checking their HSFI email every day because they will lose out on many opportunities if they don’t do so.  Seniors are emailed college information almost on a daily basis by HSFI.

On the school website - www.fashionhighschool.net - is a document that outlines the school committees that HSFI parents can participate in.  The committees includes the Advocating & Preparing for Post-Secondary Success (APPS) Committee; the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (Fashion Dollars) Committee; the Academic & Career and Technical Education Accreditation Committee; the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Committee and the School Safety Committee.  Descriptions of the committee are on the document. It would be great to have as many HSFI parents as possible to get involved in developing our strategic plans to make HSFI better each day.

On the school website - www.fashionhighschool.net - is a document that has the information on all our school clubs and activities.  Please feel free to contact the HSFI staff members who run these clubs and activities.  Please encourage your children to join a club or activity to connect them to the school.

If you have not done so yet, your child’s lunch application is now due.  This is important to make sure your child pays or does not pay the appropriate amount of money for lunch.  In addition, Title I funding in New York City is tied to the information that parents/guardians provide on the yearly lunch application.  The High School of Fashion Industries receives nearly $1 million in Title I funding each year.  You can now fill out your lunch application online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 9.25.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  It was great see HSFI parents at our first Parents Association meeting of the school year this past Wednesday.  Next month’s Parents Association meeting will be College Financial Aid Night.  We will have a great speaker on understanding how college financial aid works.  Every parent of every child of every grade should be interested in this topic.

This Friday is our annual College T-Shirt Day.  A large majority of our staff will be wearing a t-shirt, sweatshirt or some sort of gear from the college that they attended.  The day will hopefully have a motivating effect on our seniors who are beginning to work on their college applications and get our 9th, 10th and 11th graders thinking about the college process.

Continuing on the college theme, remind your child that they should be checking their HSFI email and Jupiter grades every day.  Students should be getting in the habit of checking their HSFI every day because they will lose out on many opportunities.  It is critical for all students, including all seniors, who are emailed college information almost on a daily basis by HSFI.  You and your child should be checking Jupiter Grades every day to see where students stand in their classes.

This past Wednesday and Thursday we held our annual Student Club Fair.  We had over 30 clubs and activities presenting at the fair.  Attached to this email and posted on the school website is a PowerPoint presentation with information on a large number of these activities.  The slides describe the club, its purpose as well as where and when they meet.  Please encourage your children to join a club or activity.

This Thursday we will be holding a hiring committee for selection of a new Assistant Principal who supervises Special Education.  The committee is made up of HSFI parents, staff members, students and supervisors.  Thank you to the 6 HSFI parents who signed up to be part of the committee.

I also want to highlight a new computer lab that we created for HSFI students.  The computer lab is located in Room 201 and has 34 computers along with color printers.  The computer lab is open at 7:30 am until 9:00 am when second period begins.  It is open during the lunch periods.  It is open after school from 2:45 pm until 5:00 pm.  Please have your child make use of the lab if they need it.

The school cafeteria will be open for breakfast and lunch.  Breakfast is free for all students.  If you were in the NYC school system last year, the amount of money you pay or do not pay for lunch carries over from last year until you submit a new application.  If you are new to NYC or NYC public schools, you have to pay full price for lunch until a lunch application is submitted.  Full price for lunch is $1.75.  If you do not submit your application by the end of September, your child will have to pay full price for lunch.

Thank you!

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 9.18.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

First, I wanted to address the explosion that took place on Saturday night close by to HSFI.  I have been assured by the NYC Department of Education that all will be safe as school begins on Monday.  The transit system will be fully operational for the Monday morning commute.  I totally understand your concerns, but our neighborhood might be the safest place to be following what took place.  It is important that your child attend school and keep their education going in the right direction.  I will email and call HSFI families if I get additional information.

As you are planning your schedule for the week I hope you can attend our first Parents Association meeting of the school year, this Wednesday, September 21 at 6:00 pm in Room 829.

Please encourage your child to attend the Student Club Fair that will take place during the lunch periods this Wednesday and Thursday.  We have over 30 clubs that will have student and staff representatives available to speak to.  When I get the complete list, I will send out to Fashion Families and post on the school website.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 9.13.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  I hope everyone has enjoyed the long weekend.  We had a smooth opening last week and look forward to keeping the positive energy going at the High School of Fashion Industries.

This week we will be running program changes for students who need them on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Please keep in mind that these program changes will only be approved for changes that are needed for meeting graduation requirements.  Changes will not be approved based on teacher preferences.  Students will not be allowed to drop classes that help them meet college and career readiness requirements including their CTE major along with math and science classes.  The expectation is that all HSFI students complete their major program and take 4 years of math and science classes if these classes can fit into their program.  All students must be scheduled for 5 and a half hours of instruction.

On this email and on the ‘Fashion Parents’ section of the school website are some informational tools for NYC Public School Parents from Department of Education.  The first is ‘NYC School Accounts’ which provides students’ attendance, grades, the contact information we have on file for you, test scores and class schedules.  The second is ‘Back to School Basics’ which provides you important informations on all aspects of the NYC Department of Education.  The third is ‘Achieve NYC’ which provides information on working towards college readiness in NYC schools.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 6.19

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.  Happy Father’s Day to all of our HSFI Dads.

The Regents testing period continues this week until Thursday, June 23.  Please understand that Regents examinations are high-stakes tests that students need to graduate high school.  A complete Regents schedule is attached to this email and posted on our school website.  Please make sure that your children attend the exams they are scheduled for and have studied for these exams.  We will soon be getting Regents results back – they will be posted on the school website as they become available.

Friday, June 24 and Monday, June 27 are instructional days on the NYC DOE calendar.  We will be using a special half day schedule where students who begin Period 1 arrive at 8:45 am and students who finish after 9th period leave school at Noon.  Students will follow their Spring schedules.  Lunch will be served for students at the end of their day.  Below is the class schedule for these two days:

Period 1
8:45-9:03
Period 2
9:07-9:25
Period 3
9:29-9:47
Period 4
9:51-10:09
Period 5
10:13-10:31
Period 6
10:35-10:53
Period 7
10:57-11:15
Period 8
11:19-11:37
Period 9
11:41-11:59

Tuesday, June 28 is the last day of school for students.  Students will arrive at 9:00 am to pick up their report cards, diplomas and sadly for some, their summer school programs.

Getting back to the Regents, when students come to school for these Regents exams they should bring:
#1 - Exam invitations
#2 – Student identification card
#3 – 2 pencils and 2 pens.

It is important that students DO NOT BRING ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT to their testing rooms when they take their Regents exams.  This past week we had 2 students caught with electronic equipment and have their Regents exams invalidated and given a 0 on the exam.  This electronic equipment policy is New York State law.

Please contact anyone of our Assistant Principals—Ms. Moore (English); Mr. Kohm (Math); Mr. Rodrigues (Social Studies); Ms. Frank (Science) - if you have any specific questions about these exams.

If your child does not have a Regents exam on a specific day during the testing period, they do not attend school that day unless there is a special event or tutoring session.

Please make sure you continue to check out The Fashionable Times Blog where we will include all the important information you need as Fashion parents.  The website link is: http://hsfifashionabletimes.blogspot.com/
