The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 4.8.18

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal, Daryl Blank.

I hope your children had a wonderful Spring Break!  Classes resume on Monday as we have 9 weeks of classes left before Regents examinations as the school year winds down.  Make sure your children know this and appreciate the importance of finishing the school year strong.  Counselors will be programming students for summer school based on marking period 2 grades – the second marking period ends on April 27.  Students must understand the grades that they receive in June will be the ones that colleges will see.

Tomorrow, Monday, April 9, we will have our third installment of our new First Monday program.  The redesign of our First Monday involves students participating in educational activities where students selected from a menu of activities based on their personal interests.  Some of the areas that these activities cover are Arts & Culture; Creative Expression; Designing Your Future; Film; Fun & Games; Mind and Body; and Social Responsibility.  All students have been assigned an activity based on their choices; there is no changing of activities at this time.

Students report to school at 8:30 am where they will take attendance in their 3rd period classes.  From there, students will move onto their First Monday activity that will last until approximately 11:30 am.  At this point, students will be able to get lunch.  From 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm, students will have an opportunity to have individual conferences with their teachers and/or receive tutoring from them.  If a student is facing academic difficulties, I would encourage them to attend this session to meet with their teacher and receive additional tutoring, if needed.  During this afternoon time, we will also be running an Advanced Placement / Honors Fair in Room 829 (Student Lounge) for 9th, 10th and 11th graders showcasing these challenging academic opportunities for next school year.  I encourage all students to attend this Advanced Placement / Honors Fair – taking these classes will put them ahead in getting into the best colleges possible.  The school day will officially end at 1:15 pm when HSFI teachers will then begin their professional development activities.

Starting on Tuesday, April 10, students will be starting their 2nd half of the Spring term programs which means a change of day for any class that meets less than five days a week.  Classes that met Monday, Wednesday and Friday now meet only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Classes that met Tuesday and Thursday, now meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  The classes that this change applies to include Physical Education / Gym, Peer Group Connection, Junior College Prep APPS classes and SAGA Math tutoring, Check with your child about their schedule change as it might affect when they have to report to school each day and/or when they finish their school day.

Besides the homestretch of classes, the winding down of the school year signifies the beginning of our student work showcases.  In many cases, these student showcases are the culmination of four years of hard work by our students and it would be great to have Fashion Families in attendance to support them.  Our first student showcase is the opening of our International Center of Photography exhibit – the opening takes place on Wednesday, April 25 at 4:00 pm.  Our Senior Art Show that showcases our Graphics & Illustration students opens on Friday, May 4.  Our public Fashion Show that showcases our Fashion Design students is on Friday, May 11.  As always, our window displays will reflect the amazing work that our Visual Merchandising students do on a daily basis.

I wanted to give a special thank you to all the Fashion families who completed the NYC Department of Education Parent Survey.  I do not know our final participation percentage, but I wanted you to know how much I appreciate your support.  Once again, I apologize for all the phone calls and emails since I had no way to know who completed the survey and who did not.

Thank you!
