The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 9.25.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  It was great see HSFI parents at our first Parents Association meeting of the school year this past Wednesday.  Next month’s Parents Association meeting will be College Financial Aid Night.  We will have a great speaker on understanding how college financial aid works.  Every parent of every child of every grade should be interested in this topic.

This Friday is our annual College T-Shirt Day.  A large majority of our staff will be wearing a t-shirt, sweatshirt or some sort of gear from the college that they attended.  The day will hopefully have a motivating effect on our seniors who are beginning to work on their college applications and get our 9th, 10th and 11th graders thinking about the college process.

Continuing on the college theme, remind your child that they should be checking their HSFI email and Jupiter grades every day.  Students should be getting in the habit of checking their HSFI every day because they will lose out on many opportunities.  It is critical for all students, including all seniors, who are emailed college information almost on a daily basis by HSFI.  You and your child should be checking Jupiter Grades every day to see where students stand in their classes.

This past Wednesday and Thursday we held our annual Student Club Fair.  We had over 30 clubs and activities presenting at the fair.  Attached to this email and posted on the school website is a PowerPoint presentation with information on a large number of these activities.  The slides describe the club, its purpose as well as where and when they meet.  Please encourage your children to join a club or activity.

This Thursday we will be holding a hiring committee for selection of a new Assistant Principal who supervises Special Education.  The committee is made up of HSFI parents, staff members, students and supervisors.  Thank you to the 6 HSFI parents who signed up to be part of the committee.

I also want to highlight a new computer lab that we created for HSFI students.  The computer lab is located in Room 201 and has 34 computers along with color printers.  The computer lab is open at 7:30 am until 9:00 am when second period begins.  It is open during the lunch periods.  It is open after school from 2:45 pm until 5:00 pm.  Please have your child make use of the lab if they need it.

If you have not done so yet, your child’s lunch application is now due.  This is important to make sure your child pays or does not pay the appropriate amount of money for lunch.  In addition, Title I funding in New York City is tied to the information that parents/guardians provide on the yearly lunch application.  The High School of Fashion Industries receives nearly $1 million in Title I funding each year.  You can now fill out your lunch application online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/

The school cafeteria will be open for breakfast and lunch.  Breakfast is free for all students.  If you were in the NYC school system last year, the amount of money you pay or do not pay for lunch carries over from last year until you submit a new application.  If you are new to NYC or NYC public schools, you have to pay full price for lunch until a lunch application is submitted.  Full price for lunch is $1.75.  If you do not submit your application by the end of September, your child will have to pay full price for lunch.

Thank you!

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 9.18.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.

First, I wanted to address the explosion that took place on Saturday night close by to HSFI.  I have been assured by the NYC Department of Education that all will be safe as school begins on Monday.  The transit system will be fully operational for the Monday morning commute.  I totally understand your concerns, but our neighborhood might be the safest place to be following what took place.  It is important that your child attend school and keep their education going in the right direction.  I will email and call HSFI families if I get additional information.

As you are planning your schedule for the week I hope you can attend our first Parents Association meeting of the school year, this Wednesday, September 21 at 6:00 pm in Room 829.

Please encourage your child to attend the Student Club Fair that will take place during the lunch periods this Wednesday and Thursday.  We have over 30 clubs that will have student and staff representatives available to speak to.  When I get the complete list, I will send out to Fashion Families and post on the school website.

The Fashionable Times Blog Principal's Message 9.13.16

Greetings Fashion Families from your Principal Daryl Blank.  I hope everyone has enjoyed the long weekend.  We had a smooth opening last week and look forward to keeping the positive energy going at the High School of Fashion Industries.

This week we will be running program changes for students who need them on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Please keep in mind that these program changes will only be approved for changes that are needed for meeting graduation requirements.  Changes will not be approved based on teacher preferences.  Students will not be allowed to drop classes that help them meet college and career readiness requirements including their CTE major along with math and science classes.  The expectation is that all HSFI students complete their major program and take 4 years of math and science classes if these classes can fit into their program.  All students must be scheduled for 5 and a half hours of instruction.

On this email and on the ‘Fashion Parents’ section of the school website are some informational tools for NYC Public School Parents from Department of Education.  The first is ‘NYC School Accounts’ which provides students’ attendance, grades, the contact information we have on file for you, test scores and class schedules.  The second is ‘Back to School Basics’ which provides you important informations on all aspects of the NYC Department of Education.  The third is ‘Achieve NYC’ which provides information on working towards college readiness in NYC schools.
