tYesterday, we announced the exciting news that Rihanna will be joining Cara Delevingne and Dane

DeHaan to star in Luc Besson's space epic VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS. The film
is an adaptation of Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres’ space adventure comics “Valerian and Laureline,”
which influenced STAR WARS, INDEPENDENCE DAY and Luc Besson's own THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

EuropaCorp and Yahoo! Style have teamed together for an innovative costume design contest and want your

submissions. Your design could be featured in a movie with fashion icons Cara Delevigne and Rihanna! As

Valerian (DeHaan) and Laureline (Delevingne) travel throughout the galaxy, they will encounter many exotic

beings in fantastic costumes, and Luc Besson wants your help to create these unique looks!

The contest will run through November 27, 2015, and up to 20 winners will be selected by Editor in Chief of

Yahoo! Style Joe Zee, the film’s writer/director Luc Besson and costume designer Olivier Bériot. The winners,

whose designs will be featured in the film, will be announced on December 14, 2015. Each winner will also

win $1,000.

“Thus far, we’ve received a great number of innovative and original designs," says Bériot. "One request though-

we are in need of more submissions geared toward men and aliens. Remember the sky is the limit and designs

should push the boundaries of traditional garments and design. Humans will be represented in this particular scene

in the film, but so will many alien beings who will be in need of innovative attire as well. So keep the designs

coming –Luc, Joe and I are loving this outpouring of creativity and enthusiasm for VALERIAN AND THE CITY

OF A THOUSAND PLANETS and look forward to picking our winners.”

On Friday, October 2, 2015, Dr. Oz welcomed 55 lucky students to a studio taping. The segments of the day addressed issues such as the drawbacks and benefits of ractopamine found in pork products and epsom salt on the human body. Everyone in the studio audience received a bag of eucalyptus scented epsom salt to experience it's tranquil effects at home. Dr. Oz also visited trending topics such as the posting and sharing pictures of nursing mothers on social media. In addition, he also shared a heart warming story of how a nurse helped to save the life of a mother and daughter while in labor. Students also met with the set designer/wardrobe specialist to get insider information on set design. Dr. Oz is a long standing friend of HSFI and has made an impact through Health Corps.

PHOTOVILLE

During mid September Sarah Ventura presented her work on a youth panel in Photoville. Photoville is basically an event where photographers from all over can present there work in downtown Brooklyn. Sarah Ventura presented her work on stage to kids of all ages. Her work was about a trip she took to the Dominican Republic in the Spring of this year. Sarah hasn't been to the Dominican Republic in more than a decade and everything seemed new to her to that's what she captured. She took photographs of her family, they're lifestyle and food. She was one of four people that was on the youth panel, she was very nervous but excited and she'd definitely do it again.

Dr. Oz welcomes The High School of Fashion Industries!
Students take  an OZ HEALTHIE!

Thanks to a joint effort coordinated by KCD, CFDA, and the Advisory Board, sixty-five students were awarded access to one of the most coveted tickets of the season; Givenchy’s premiere Fashion Week Runway Show. The High School of Fashion Industries seniors were mesmerized by this year’s hottest fashions as they graced the runway at Hudson River Park, Pier 26, on September 11, 2015. Students described the show as a once in lifetime opportunity that was both “inspiring and breathtaking.”

Macy's 2015

An invitation was extended to The High School of Fashion Industries to attend Macy's presents Fashion's Front Row on Thursday, September 17, 2015 @ 7:15pm. Forty Five lucky students were granted an amazing opportunity to attend the Macy’s fashion week debut which featured big name designers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Sean John, Hello Kitty, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, just to a name a few. Students also enjoyed guest performances from superstars Jason Derulo and Nate Ruess. A special thanks to CFDA and the Advisory Board for making this wonderful opportunity accessible to the students of HSFI.

Free portfolio review  for Seniors is THIS Saturday from 8:30 until 4:00 pm. If students are taking the S.A.T's they can come directly after. Students should bring as much work as they can carry; Sketchbooks, paintings, sculptures, drawings on newsprint, fabric, cake design, clothing...
by portfolio we mean a collection of recent work (no more than 2 years old)  The work does NOT have to fit into a case or plastic sleeves. When I applied for this class in the 90's I brought my work in a shopping cart (it included paintings on found objects, jeans, sneakers, denim jackets and homemade sketchbooks) If students did not get an application in, they can fill one out on Saturday when they arrive. If the student can't get there until 4pm, we will still see them. If students have already been accepted to a different class in our program, But want to try out for portfolio, they should come.
I have attached our portfolio prep flyer with more info.
The review will be held at the Cooper Union New Academic Building 41 Cooper square (3rd ave bet 6th and 7th street)

Givenchy Opens it's Doors to HSFI students for Runway Show during Fashion Week!!!!!

new Givenchy store at 747 Madison Avenue

Get ready for Givenchy’s public offering. When Riccardo Tisci shows his Givenchy collection in New York on Sept. 11, members of the general public will make up a huge portion of his audience. Twelve hundred “real people” — mostly non-industry, non-celebrity civilians (no proof of Givenchy purchase required) as well as a cadre of students and faculty from local fashion schools — will attend, along with the usual show-going industry suspects. A block of 280 tickets has been set aside for students and faculty from FIT, Parsons, Pratt Institute and the High School for Fashion Industries. In addition, another 100 tickets will be distributed to residents living in proximity to the still-under-wraps show venue, with details made public closer to the show.

The future of Fashion and Technology are intertwined!

Today, as New York’s Fashion Week kicks off, fashion and technology are coming together in a new way. Made with Code and ZAC Zac Posen are teaming up to show how computer science can push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of fashion. A dress designed by Zac Posen and with designs coded online by teen girls will debut as the finale look of Zac’s show—and hopefully inspire young girls who have an interest in fashion to see what code can help them create.
