HealthCorps Weekly Update

Hello Fashion Falcons and welcome back! HealthCorps is extremely excited to be providing weekly updates through our Fashionable Times Blog.

A quick summary for those of you who don't know what HealthCorps is:

HealthCorps® is a 501 (c)(3) founded in 2003 by heart surgeon and Daytime Emmy Award-winning host Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa to combat the childhood obesity crisis. HealthCorps is building a nationwide movement to shape a new generation.
HealthCorps Coordinators lead unique in-school and community programming designed to foster physical and mental fitness, particularly among high-need populations. The Coordinators serve as peer-mentors who deliver a progressive curriculum in nutrition, exercise and mental strength to students nationwide. For more than a decade, the HealthCorps program has inspired its participants to adopt a healthier lifestyle. And the HealthCorps schools have served as Living Labs through which we can explore the complex, underlying causes of the obesity crisis, as well as discover, communicate implement and advocate for national and regional solutions.
Today, the program network spans 44 schools in 10 states and the District of Columbia. Ultimately, HealthCorps’ goal is to extend the reach of its program to an ever-wider network of American communities. To that end, in 2012, we introduced HealthCorps University, a train the trainer professional development program that makes available the HealthCorps principles and curriculum to virtually any school, community or organization.

HealthCorps had a great year last year! Here are some highlights:

MLK Day of Service: Last winter, five dedicated students attended the Church of Holy Trinity Soup Kitchen in honor of a day of service for MLK Day. At the soup kitchen, students practiced cooking safety skills, learned about ways to prepare large and healthy meals, learned about the proper ways of serving to guests, and practiced engaging with members of the community. The students had a great time and felt really good about being given the opportunity to give back to those in need.
In School Health Fair: Last spring, approximately thirty students were chosen to help plan and to execute the first annual in school health fair. The health fair included twelve booths that were named, created, and organized by the students to raise awareness about topics surrounding the HealthCorps curriculum (physical fitness, nutrition, and mental resiliency). Students were able to attend the health fair with their teachers and classes and were able to enjoy free prizes, a live DJ, food, and a special guest, former NBA player, Felipe Lopez.
HealthCorps Annual Gala: Last spring, one student was selected and invited to attend the HealthCorps annual Gala. HealthCorps hosts a gala each year as a fundraiser to be able to provide more programs and events for students and schools across the country. At the Gala, the student was responsibility for presenting a poster board about building a community to guests of the Gala during a mini-health fair. The night included lots of great food, entertainment, and special guests.
Highway to Health: Last spring, six students were chosen to attend HealthCorps' annual Highway to Health festival. Last year's Highway to Health was held at Southstreet Seaport on a beautiful, spring day. This was a free event that was aimed to raise awareness and teach the local community about HealthCorps and its mission. The students were responsible for running a Hydration Station booth where they taught visitors about the importance of staying hydrated and about ways to make drinking water more fun! Highway to Health included a lot of free prizes, free demonstrations, free consultations, free food, and live entertainment.
